Emitec Displays Dodge Viper At SAE

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 21 -- A Dodge Viper RT/10 will be
on display at the Emitec GmbH booth, number 820, during this year's Society of
Automotive Engineers' International Congress & Exposition. The Viper, which
sports a 90-degree, eight liter V-10 engine, showcases Emitec's metal-
supported catalytic converter -- the METALIT(TM).
Emitec, a 50-50 joint venture between GKN Automotive AG and Siemens AG,
has supplied METALIT substrates for four converters on each Viper since the
vehicle's inception.
"The Viper was the first North American production vehicle to utilize the
METALIT product," said Wolfgang Maus, Emitec's managing director. "It has
been successfully used on high-performance vehicles in Europe since the mid
1980s."
The METALIT is manufactured using .04 mm metal foils coiled in an S-shape
design and bonded into honeycombs. Its special physical and geometric
properties provide substantial benefits to a vehicle's exhaust system.
According to Maus: "METALIT technology significantly lowers exhaust system
back-pressure levels while achieving improved emission levels. Reducing
engine pressure loss increases performance and fuel economy."
Heat resistance and a durable design are other METALIT attributes allowing
converters to be placed closer to the engine ensuring a quicker heating and
faster reduction of pollutant emissions. Also, METALIT-supported converters
are completely recyclable, because the metal substrate and coating can be
separated easily. Reclaimed metals ultimately can be returned to the
production process.
Sectional samples of the METALIT product will be on display, in addition
to the Viper, for a hands-on evaluation.
Many high-performance vehicles in Europe and North America utilize METALIT
and other Emitec catalytic converter substrates. Current and future domestic
vehicles incorporating Emitec substrates include the Dodge Viper, Plymouth
Prowler, Jeep(R) Cherokee, Jeep(R) Grand Cherokee, Chrysler LHS, Dodge
Intrepid, Chrysler Concorde, Eagle Vision and Dodge Durango, with additional
applications following in the near future.
Emitec, headquartered in Lohmar, Germany, is the leading designer and
manufacturer of metallic substrates for catalytic converters. The company's
North American operations are headquartered in Auburn Hills, Mich., with a
manufacturing facility in Laurens, S.C., to support domestic automakers.
