February Gas Prices Up Sharply From One Year Ago, Says CSAA

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 20 -- Retail gas prices in northern
California and Nevada continue to rise, the California State Automobile
Association (CSAA) reported today.
Self-serve unleaded averages $1.35 a gallon in northern California, up ten
cents compared to CSAA's February, 1996, Fuel Gauge Survey.

    One Year Price Comparison
In San Jose and Stockton, the average has risen seventeen cents to $1.37
and $1.36. Lake Tahoe's average rose sixteen cents to $1.38. Sacramento's
average is $1.34, up fifteen cents. San Francisco and Santa Rosa's average
increased thirteen cents to $1.40 and $1.37. Monterey's average moved up
twelve cents to $1.38. San Mateo and Hayward's average climbed eleven cents
to $1.39 and $1.38. Oakland's average is $1.35, up ten cents. San Rafael's
average is up nine cents to $1.37 per gallon. (See accompanying chart for
detailed price changes)
Regional gas prices are 10 to 15 cents higher per gallon this February
compared to one year ago and remain higher than the national average of $1.29
for self-serve unleaded. "However, average, gas prices are 15 to 20 cents
lower than they were during the May, 1996, peak of $1.60 a gallon," said CSAA
spokesman Ron Kennedy.
"The recent refinery fire in Martinez and the partial shutdown of several
California oil refineries for maintenance have affected gas inventories and
prices throughout northern California," Kennedy continued.
Compared to last year at this time, the Nevada average for self-serve
unleaded is up ten cents to $1.35 a gallon. Reno's average is up thirteen
cents to $1.38. In Las Vegas, the average rose four cents to $1.35.
Motorists may see pump prices at individual retailers which vary from the
survey averages. CSAA provides an array of automotive, travel, financial, and
insurance services to over 3.6 million members in California, Nevada and Utah.
