Ford Division Sponsors 'Schindler's List' Feb. 23 Without Commercial Interruption

DETROIT, Feb. 19 -- Ford Division will sponsor the network
broadcast premiere of "Schindler's List" from 7:30-11 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, on
NBC. Steven Spielberg's Academy Award-winning film will air without
commercial interruption -- unprecedented for modern network television -- to
preserve the film's dramatic and artistic impact.
"Ford Division is privileged to bring this powerful film into American
homes," said Ross Roberts, Ford Motor Company vice president and general
manager, Ford Division. "We believe the lessons of our past, especially the
lessons we have inherited from the Holocaust, provide a strong foundation for
building tolerance in today's increasingly diverse society."
Ford is the sole sponsor of the broadcast, and there will be no national
or local commercials during the movie.
"Schindler's List" won seven Academy Awards in 1994. It tells the true
story of Oskar Schindler, who saved more than 1,100 Jews from death in Nazi
concentration camps during World War II. Schindler's deeds are widely seen as
evidence that an individual can make a difference against overpowering
prejudice.
As a tie-in to the movie, NBC and Ford Division are offering schools the
opportunity to use the broadcast to challenge students to question how they
deal with prejudice in their daily lives.
A study guide, produced by Lifetime Learning Systems, includes a set of
questions and a word game testing students' knowledge of the Holocaust. It
also uses role-playing to illustrate the group dynamics of prejudice and to
suggests ways to fight it. The study guide was sent to 24,800 public, private
and parochial schools.
The movie features Liam Neeson as Schindler and Ben Kingsley as
Schindler's factory manager. Ralph Fiennes plays Nazi officer Amon Goeth,
whom Schindler outwitted to bring the Jewish captives to safety. Both Fiennes
and Neeson were nominated for Academy Awards for their performances.
The film's seven Academy Awards include Best Picture, Best Director, Best
Screenplay, Best Score, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Art
Direction.
