Terry Labonte is on the pole for the second time this season, he sat on the point last weekend. His Kellogg's Monte Carlo has also been a force to be reckoned with on the track as he has led over 1/3 of 900 miles completed at Daytona and Rockingham. 311 miles to be exact.
Unfortunate luck with engine related problems cost him a chance at a trip to victory lane in both events.
Here are his comments following his Busch Pole run.
"We were fast right off the truck. It's really something to beat Jeff (Gordon, his teammate) in qualifying. He's a real good qualifier. It was a real good run for us. All the guys have done a great job on the car. It was really cold out there. I'm freezing. I'm from Texas. It's really hard to get the tires out. You've really just got to throw away the first lap, and work on getting the temperature in 'em for the second lap. We did OK today. You had to be careful getting 'em hot. I came around for the green and about flat-spotted the front tire getting into three because the left front locked up on me. It's a good race track for us. We seem to have a pretty good combination here. We just want to finish. If we can get out of here with a good finish, we'll be happy. I'd sure like to win it, like everybody else. We've had some tough luck the last couple of weeks, and we just hope that's behind us. "I knew it was going to be close when we were sitting there and Jeff still had to run. The guys in the engine room had an outstanding engine. We had plenty of power. The hardest problem we had was getting the tires heated up the first lap so we could lay down a good lap on the second time by. When it's 35 degrees outside and your tires are just sitting there, they get cold. It just takes a little while for the heat to get in 'em. Sunday will be a different deal because you can warm up your tires when you come around for the green flag and before restarts. "I've always liked this track. I seemed to have adapted pretty well to it. It's a fun race track. It's probably one of the best short tracks we go to, and probably the perfect size for our cars. "You don't ever expect to win, but you always hope to. This has been a good track for us in the past. With the tough luck we've had in the first two events, we just want to have a good finish. We're kind of struggling in the points right now. It's a long season but you don't want to give up too many of them."
