Marco Greco of Sao Paulo, Brazil, got his start in go-karts when he was nine years old. He later went on to become the Brazilian National Karting Champion. When he was thirteen, he moved to motorcycles. He quickly excelled in these racing events, becoming a three-time champion of Brazil, a four-time state champion and three-time Centauro champion. In the late 1980s, he began racing Formula 3 and Formula 3000 cars. He ran his best season in 1989, driving British Formula 3000 cars for the Eddie Jordan Team; he finished on the podium four times, in nine races-finishing fourth in season championship points. Greco's first competed in the Indy Car series in 1993, with a best finish of 11th at Phoenix. He competed in the PPG Cup until he joined Team Scandia/AMS for the IRL season opener at Loudon, New Hampshire in 1996.

His first Indy attempt in 1993, ended in disappointment when he failed to qualify. The next year, he qualified on the fourth day, started 32nd and finished 27th. The 1995 Indy ended in yet another disappointment when he failed to qualify again. When he came out for the Indy in 1996, he qualified at 228.840 seconds, started 22nd, and ran as high as 18th before engine problems ended the day in 26th place.
