Northern Light IRL: Lazier, Cheever Earn All-America Honors

INDIANAPOLIS- 2000 Northern Light Cup winner Buddy Lazier has been named to the All-America Auto Racing Team and is eligible for the prestigious Jerry Titus Award as driver of the year.

Lazier, from Vail, Colo., was one of two members of the first team in the Open Wheel category as selected by the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association. Fellow Indy Racing Northern Light Series standout Eddie Cheever Jr. was named to the second team.

Joining Lazier on the first team was CART champion Gil de Ferran. 2000 Indianapolis 500 winner Juan Montoya joined Cheever on the second team. 1996 Indianapolis 500 winner Lazier was one of 12 drivers named to the All-America first team. He will be honored and the annual AARWBA banquet Jan. 13 in Pomona, Calif., where the winner of the Titus Award will be announced.

Other drivers eligible for the Titus Award are NASCAR Winston Cup champion Bobby Labonte, NHRA Top Fuel champion Gary Scelzi, NHRA Funny Car champion John Force and World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser.

Lazier clinched his first Indy Racing Northern Light Series championship with 290 points and two victories in the Delta Faucet/Coors Light/Tae-Bo/Hemelgarn Racing Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone.

It was the second time that Lazier was named to the first team. He also received the honor in 1996 after winning at Indianapolis.

Two drivers from each category - Open Wheel, Road Racing, Short Track, Stock Car, Drag Racing and At-Large - are named to the All-America team.
