KARTING: Sodano wins 2000 World Karting Association Championship

FAIRFIELD, N.J.--U.S. Formula 2000 driver Adam Sodano recently won the 2000 World Karting Association (WKA) championship in the 125cc Shifter class.

The 21-year-old Sodano, who last year competed in the American Continental Championship in U.S. F2000 while continuing to race karts, becomes the first driver from Boston to win the 125cc Shifter class. In 1999, Sodano won the WKA Daytona World Championship and he has been the WKA Grand National Champion three times.

In addition to winning the championship, Sodano was one of seven drivers selected by the WKA to take part in the Skip Barber Shootout competition. The shootout involves 16 drivers from across North America competing for four spots in the Skip Barber Race series. The competition is tentatively scheduled to take place at Sebring International Raceway in early 2001.

"The WKA is proud of his accomplishments," said Randy Krugler, President of the WKA. "Ive watched Adam for several years now and not only is he great on the track, hes a true gentlemen off the track as well. We believe that he will be a wonderful representative for us as he moves up the ladder in motorsports."

"Im thrilled to have been selected by the WKA to participate in the shootout," said Sodano. "Im looking forward to the competition as well as gearing up for the 2001 racing season."

The U.S. F2000 National Championship will host a two-day winter test session January 26-27, 2001, at Homestead-Miami Speedway in preparation for the upcoming season. The 2001 season begins Saturday March 3, 2001, at Homestead in conjunction with the Grand-American Road Racing Association on the 2.21-mile road course.
