ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--The 2001 Speedvision World Challenge season will be the richest in series history, with per-race awards increasing over 75 percent and season awards up 48 percent.
The boost, based on heavy involvement from new sponsors Toyo Tires and Rogaine and returning sponsors Superchips, Eibach and Borla, brings the total earnings potential, not including contingency monies, to $925,900--up from the $625,000 paid out in 2000. Additional details about the new programs will be announced at a later date.
The Speedvision GT Championship per-race purse increases 72 percent, up to $38,700 for 2001 from $22,500. Racewinners still receive $8,000, but a finish of 10th or higher now garners over $1,000--a feat of fifth or higher would accomplish in 2000. The 2001 Speedvision World Challenge GT Champion still receives a bonus $50,000 at year-end, part of the $100,000 class points fund payout. Other major increases include the Rookie of the Year, increasing 500 percent from $2,000 to $10,000.
The Speedvision Touring Car Championship received the largest relative increase in race purse--rising from $16,500 in 2000 to $30,200 in 2001--a gain of 83 percent. Unlike the Speedvision GT payout, the Touring Car purse increases throughout the entire field, with a win increasing from $4,000 to $5,000. Like GT, Touring Car year-end points fund remains unchanged, with the winner taking home $20,000 of the $50,000 available. The 2001 Speedvision Touring Car Rookie of the Year will earn an additional $8,000.
Increasing the purse for racers is like winning the race from a promoters standpoint, said Speedvision World Challenge General Manager Mitch Wright. Our new relationship with Toyo Tires and enhanced programs with great companies like Superchips, Eibach, Borla and Rogaine have given us the ability to make this series a more viable one for competitors, ultimately raising the level of competition.
