Key West, Fla.--Indianapolis 500 veteran Raul Boesel was looking to capture his first Super Boat World Championship this weekend in Key West, but fate was not on his side.

"We were fighting for position with two or three other boats going into the second turn on the first lap, and caught the wave off another boat wrong, flipping the Rio Roses," Boesel explained. "The cockpit started to fill with water, so we had to put on our oxygen masks on and dive. Its the first time this has happened to me. Initially I was quite anxious, but you have to calm yourself and do whats necessary to get out of the boat.

The Rio Roses finished a close second in Wednesdays preliminary race with super boat veteran Phil Lipschutz at the throttle as Boesel piloted the effort. The Rio Roses crossed the finish line less than half a second behind fellow Super Vee competitor, Popeye.

"Im very disappointed with the outcome," Boesel continued. "I thought we stood a great chance of winning this championship. Also, our opponent who won the first race flipped as well. If only we had made it through the first lap."

The Rio Roses enjoyed success in this years Super Boat National Championship with Boesel and Lipschutz finishing fourth and collecting four top-three finishes in as many starts.

The Key West Super Boat World Championship will be televised at the end of February on ESPN2. Dates and times will be determined at a later date.
