After finishing as series runner-up the last three years, longtime Valvoline driver Brian Simo clinched the BFGoodrich Trans-Am championship last Sunday in the season's final race.
Simo took the pole in his Tommy Bahama Qvale Mangusta on the San Diego street course and led early, while title rival Paul Gentilozzi fell out with an oil pump failure.
Simo needed a strong finish to overcome Gentilozzi's 15-point advantage, but he had engine problems in the closing laps. Simo fell back to third but ended up 12 points ahead, 261-249, saying he had but "a couple of drops" of Valvoline Synthetic racing oil left!
