SAN DIEGO, Calif.--Mike Fitzgerald, of Phoenix,
Ariz., captured his second
Speedvision World Challenge GT pole in the last three races, edging Terry
Borcheller by 0.068-second for Sunday's season finale at the San Diego
Grand
Prix. David Schardt will start third.
Driving the No. 38 Westward Ho Casino/MPIE Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Fitzgerald turned a lap of 1:14.257 (79.992 mph) around the 1.65-mile temporary circuit at the old Naval Training Center in the closing moments of the 15-minute session.
"Michael Galati had a problem and spun in turn one, dragging a lot of dirt onto the track," said Fitzgerald, who hopes to wrap up the worldwide Porsche Cup with a win this weekend. "Terry [Borcheller] got a quick one in early, and I thought that was it. Then, lap after lap, the track cleared off and I was able to get one in at the end. This track is hard on brakes. In the 13 minutes I was out there, mine were totally gone. It'll be a pretty wild race."
Borcheller, also of Phoenix, Ariz., has two-straight podium finishes heading into this weekend, and sat atop the time sheets for the majority of the session with a lap of 1:14.325 (79.919 mph) in the No. 52 AASCO Performance Saleen SR. Schardt turned a fast time of 1:14.464 (79.770 mph) in the No. 94 Wheel Source/Hikari Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup for third on the grid.
Actor Tim Allen will start 32nd on the grid in his first Speedvision GT appearance of the season.
