CART FedEx Championship Series Returns to Mexico after 20-Year Absence

JACKSON, Michigan-- Two decades have passed since the speed and excitement of Champ Cars were witnessed firsthand in Mexico. In five months, the stars and cars of the CART FedEx Championship Series will journey south to Mexico's third largest city for the Monterrey Grand Prix on March 11.

Event promoter U.E. "Pat" Patrick today announced that over 40,000 grandstand seat tickets and general admission passes have been sold since going on sale fifteen days ago. Additional grandstand seating is now being planned for the much-anticipated event, the season-opening race of the 2001 schedule, which will be held on a new 2.1-mile temporary street circuit in the heart of Monterrey at scenic Fundidora Park.

"Based on the pace of ticket and hospitality sales, the Monterrey Grand Prix of Mexico appears on course to set a record for total sales as well as set a crowd record for a Champ Car race," said Patrick.

There has also been a strong demand for trackside suites, with 63 suites reserved. Ticket prices range from $15, $20 and $30 (USD) for Friday, Saturday and Sunday general admission passes, to $155 for a three-day pit row reserved seat which includes a paddock pass. Group ticket sales are being handled in the United States through Continental Sports, Inc., based in Atlanta, Ga., at (770) 225-2200, and from the Monterrey Grand Prix office in Mexico at (528) 340-7105. Individual ticket purchases are available through Ticketmaster at (528) 369-9000.

In conjunction with CART, the Monterrey Grand Prix was announced in April of this year by Patrick, a co-founder of CART and veteran team owner, with partners Jerry Forsythe and Forsythe Racing, Mexican conglomerate FEMSA and with the cooperation of the State of Nuevo Leon.
