SCCA: Fitzgerald keeps momentum, paces Speedvision GT field at Laguna Seca

MONTEREY, Calif.Mike Fitzgerald, of Phoenix, Ariz., continued his dominance of the Speedvision World Challenge GT Championship, pacing practice for Sunday's Round Eight race, where he will try for his third-straight win. Alfred duPont, of Kennett Square, Pa., topped the sheets for the Speedvision Touring Car Championship.
Fitzgerald, driving the No. 38 Westward Ho Hotel Vegas/MPIE Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, turned a fastest time of 1:35.965 (83.955 mph)1.189 seconds faster than the qualifying record set by Peter Kitchak in 1999. Michael Galati was second fastest in the No. 9 Champion Audi S4 Competition with a lap of 1:36.226 (83.727 mph).
Peter Cunningham was third in the No. 42 RealTime Racing BMW M3, followed by Terry Borcheller's No. 52 AASCO Saleen SR and Bill Cooper's No. 01 Les Stanford/Pirate Racing Chevrolet Corvette C5.
Driving the No. 51 European Racing Technologies BMW 328is, duPont was quickest in Touring Car practice, turning a sub-record time of 1:41.433 (79.429 mph). Fitzgerald was second, this time in the No. 12 Pure Image/TCKlineRacing.com BMW 328Ci, with a lap of 1:41.947 (79.029 mph).
Points leader Pierre Kleinubing was third fastest in the No. 42 BuySellorHold.com/RealTime Racing Acura Integra R, followed by teammate Hugh Plumb and Don Salama, in the No. 94 Turner Motorsports/H&R Springs BMW 328is.
Qualifying for both races is set for Saturday morning, with the Speedvision Touring Car race taking the green flag Saturday afternoon at 3:25 (PT). The Speedvision GT race is scheduled for Sunday morning, at 9:00 a.m.
