Georgian looks to wrap up rookie title in Saturdays race
MADISON, Ill. The leading Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year contender Joey Clanton of Stockbridge, Ga., became the fourth rookie to win a pole in 2000, leading the field of 60 cars in qualifying for Saturdays BFGoodrich Tires 200 at Gateway International Raceway.
After making an early qualifying run and turning a lap of 34.338 sec. (131.050 mph), Clanton watched as his time stood as the best of the day. He becomes the tenth different pole winner of 2000.
"This gives us a big boost for our race tomorrow," said Clanton, who joins Robbie Pyle, Johnny Sauter and Larry Foyt as other rookie pole winners. "Track position is so critical here, it is a real advantage for us to be starting up front. Thanks to the testing we did here, we have a good race setup for tomorrow."
Ohios Pyle, Clantons competitor for the rookie honors, will start the BFGoodrich Tires 200 from the middle of the field, having to take a points position to qualify for the race. Pyles timed qualifying was slowed as he slipped going into turn one.
Kevin Cywinski of Wisconsin will start second after qualifying with a lap of 34.397 sec. (130.825 mph), with teammate Mike Garvey, of Minnesota, qualifying third with a time of 34.422 sec. (130.730 mph). Veterans Glenn Allen Jr. and Butch Miller will round out the top-five qualifiers.
Mike Cope of Orlando, Fla., won a 50-lap qualifying race on Friday evening. He adds his name to the 42 car starting field in the $226,700 final event of the 2000 ASA ACDelco Series season set for Saturday.
Activities for the BFGoodrich Tires 200 begin on Saturday with the on-track fan autograph session at 6 p.m. Pre-race ceremonies start at 7:15 pm, with the BFGoodrich Tires 200 taking the green flag at 8 pm (local).
