Todd Ellison of West Jordan, Utah hopes to lay claim to his first
USAC
driving championship this Saturday night when the Western Sprint Car
Series
joins the USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet cars for a "doubleheader' racing
program on the 1/2-mile paved Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway. He will face
the
challenge of three other title hopefuls
Ellison leads Burney Lamar of West Sacramento, Calif. by 45 points and Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif. by 53 with 72 available in Saturday night's finale. Davey Hamilton of Las Vegas, Nev. also has a mathematical chance at the title, trailing Ellison by 67.
A 40-lap feature event is scheduled to conclude the Sprint car portion of the doubleheader, which gets under way with practice at 3 pm.
Of the four, Hamilton may have the edge at Irwindale, having won the only previous Sprint car race there this year. Ellison finished second, while Lamar was seventh, but Hunt was the fastest qualifier.
