Memphis, TN-Jeg Coughlin, Jr won his first NHRA professional Championship in Pro Stock, NHRA's most competitive professional category. He mathematically clinched the title at the AutoZone Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park when he Ron Krisher got beat in the opening round.

Kurt Johnson was eliminated from the mathematical chase for the Championship when he failed to qualify. The only driver with a chance to catch Jeg was fellow Ohio driver Ron Krisher. In order for him to win the title Jeg would have had to not show up for the remaining three races and get beat in the first round of competition at the AutoZone Nationals. In addition, Krisher would have had to reset the NHRA national record at each of the three remaining event and win all three races.

Jeg went on to win the NHRA AutoZone Nationals by beating George Marnell, Mark Pawuk, Larry Morgan and Scott Geoffrion. This was his tenth victory of the year, which gives him the second most wins in a single season by a Pro Stock driver. He has three races remaining to break Darrell Alderman's single season record of 11.

"Winning the Championship was our goal before the season started. To accomplish a goal like this required our entire team working together. None of this would have been possible with the support of my family, team members, all of our dedicated associates at Jeg's Mail Order, the vendor support of our racing and track tested program," explained Jeg after clinching the title. "This has been an awesome year so far for Team Jeg's! The season is not over for us even though we won the Championship. We have three races left including this one and our goal is to break Darrell Alderman's single season NHRA win record of 11 victories in Pro Stock. We currently have won ten races so far this year and we are on target to break this long standing record."
