Alex Harris of Simi Valley, Calif. drove his West Valley Grinding
Special
to victory in Saturday night's 30-lap MCI WorldCom Western Midget Car race
at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif. The win was the first in this year's
Western Midget Series for USAC's 2-time TQ Midget Car Champ.
Harris caught Danny Ebberts on the 12th lap and led the rest of the way to beat series point leader Bobby Boone, Ebberts, Bryan Stanfill and Shane Scully. Boone's finish, coupled with Wally Pankratz' sixth-place finish, extended Boone's point lead to 15 points going into an October 27-28 two-night program of racing at Perris (Calif.) Speedway. Ebberts, who led the first 11 laps at Hanford, trails Boone by 35 points.
Steve Paden, winner of the September 23 race at Bakersfield, Calif., escaped injury in a flip on the seventh lap of the Hanford feature.
Ronnie Day was the fastest Hanford qualifier, while Day, Paden and Matt Streeter won heat races. Ebberts won the semi.
