ASA: Rookie Larry Foyt Earns First Career Pole for Winchester 400

Second Generation Star Becomes 84th Driver to Collect ASA Pole

WINCHESTER, Ind.--With the new era of the ASA ACDelco Series returning to the famed high-banks of Winchester Speedway, it seemed fitting for second-generation driver Larry Foyt to capture his first career pole at the high banked half-mile. The Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year candidate becomes the 84th different driver in ASA history to earn a pole.

Foyt, son to legendary racecar driver AJ Foyt, turned a lap of 15.656 sec. (114.972 mph), besting the fastest lap ever turned by an ASA car at the speedway, set by Mark Martin in 1980 at 15.740 seconds. Larrys father ran several times at the speedway in the late 1960s.

"I was so nervous, I had to wait it out in the truck," Foyt said. "I had a good car alll day, but I was saving things for qualifying. I didnt want to show all that I had. It was a good lap, but I didnt think it would hold up."

Another rookie, Ohios Robbie Pyle, will start on the outside of the front row,, posting a time of 15.663 seconds (114.921 mph) in the Young Motorsports Chevrolet. It will be the second time in 2000 where two rookies will start on the front row.

Mike Garvey, of Minnesota, qualified third with a time of 15.696 sec. (114.679 mph). Starting outside of Garvey will be Indianapolis Tim Taylor, who showed up late missing two practice sessions, but still turned a lap of 15.744 sec. Dave Sensiba claimed his best qualifying position of the year to round out the top five.

Several Indiana drivers made the starting field in first round qualifying including South Bends David Stremme (9th), Plymouths Brian Ross (11th) and Indianapoliss Russ Tuttle (17th).

Three-time Winchester 400 winner Mike Cope won the 100-lap qualifier, his third qualifying race win of the year. Cope started 15th in the event and passed pole sitter Rick Beebe on lap 76 to take the win that will start him 21st in Sundays Winchester 400
