HOUSTON-- Larry Foyt, son of four-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt, will make his debut in the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) series. Foyt, 23, will attempt to qualify the No. 41 Harrah's Pontiac Monday afternoon, October 2nd, for the ARCA race at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. The Easy Care Vehicle Services Contract 100 race is scheduled to run Wednesday evening, October 4th after NASCAR Winston Cup pole qualifying.
"It's another step in his racing career," said the senior Foyt, who wants to give his son experience on a superspeedway. "I told Larry to drive to his ability and just try to gain experience. I think it's important for him to gain as much experience as possible in a variety of cars. He never drove a stock car before this year and he has adapted very well so I think he'll adapt to ARCA too."
"It's a big step for me," said young Foyt, who is a rookie in the American Speed Association (ASA) stock car series this year. He added, "I'm going there to learn. I'll be running a car that is heavier and has more power than my Harrah's ASA car. It will be important to stay focused because I have to learn the car, the track and the other competitors."
In ASA competition, Foyt's best results in the No. 14 Harrah's Pontiac have come on one-mile ovals this year. He qualified third at Chicago Motor Speedway and finished sixth at Wisconsin State Fair Park in Milwaukee after starting 25th. Foyt also plans to compete in the final ARCA event of the year at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Foyt has run the open-wheel Formula 2000 cars at both Atlanta and on a modified oval at Lowe's Motor Speedway, but this will be his first time on a 1.5-mile oval in a stock car.
Foyt is single and currrently lives in Mooresville, N.C. He graduated from Texas Christian University in May with a degree in communications.
