BRASELTON, Ga. Terry Borcheller and Mike Fitzgerald, both of Phoenix, Ariz., took the Speedvision World Challenge GT and Touring Car poles, respectively, for Friday's Round Seven races, part of the Road Atlanta Petit Le Mans.
Borcheller, driving the AASCO Saleen SR, sat second on the speed charts to Peter Cunningham's RealTime Racing BMW M3, but jumped to the top with under two minutes remaining with a record-smashing lap of 1:31.966 (99.428 mph)0.024-second quicker than Cunningham's 1:31.990 (99.402 mph).
"We really concentrated on a qualifying setup," said Borcheller, who indicated that he will finish the season with the AASCO team, which he has subbed for on-and-off this season, scoring a win at Lime Rock. "That was an all-out lap. I don't think I could go any faster. I was off track several times."
Bill Cooper, of Bozeman, Mt., was third in the Les Stanford/Pirate Racing Corvette C5, with a lap of 1:32.406 (98.954 mph), followed by Michael Galati's Champion Audi S4 Competition and Jeff McMillin's JJ's Snacks/John Hancock BMW M3. In all, the top-12 cars were under the Speedvision GT qualifying mark, set by Cooper in 1999.
Fitzgerald, hot off his first-career Speedvision World Challenge winin a GT car at Texastook his first-career pole in the Pure Image/TCKlineRacing.com BMW 328Ci with a record-setting lap of 1:37.989 (93.316 mph).
"I've been driving at least two cars per weekend this year--this time I'm driving three, so going from the (Speedvision GT) Porsche to the BMW is not that big of a deal," said Fitzgerald. "I got a great clean lap when the tires were good. That was all I had. I thought pole would be a 38.2, so when they told me a 37.9I knew I was in good shape."
Alfred duPont was second fastest in the European Technologies BMW 328is with a lap of 1:38.307 (93.014 mph), followed by Neal Sapp's TCKlineRacing.com/ProParts BMW 328Ci, points leader Pierre Kleinubing's BuySellorHold.com/RealTime Racing Acura Integra R and Don Salama's Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW 328is.
