Indianapolis---Riley & Scott is set to introduce a
new generation MKIII sports car, the Series C, for 2001, following the
first major redesign of the most successful open top prototype in the
modern era. An intensive build program is underway, with the new model
due to hit the track in March next year.
The famed US sports car manufacturer has taken on the new project in response to customer demand for an updated version of the Championship winning MKIII. Riley & Scott founder, Bob Riley, comments, "We have confirmed orders from two established sports car teams and we're actively seeking additional orders. The MKIII is a proven product with an enviable history of success, including 41 wins from 79 starts in less than 5 years of competition. The Series C is set to build on this winning formula, drawing on our wealth of experience and expertise. "
The Series C design will include a new body for maximised aerodynamic efficiency, a revised engine position to lower the center of gravity, and a new Xtrac sports car gearbox. It will be developed to accept either Ford or Judd engine installations and with a single roll hoop configuration for the ALMS Series, or double roll hoop, for Grand Am Series and Sports Racing World Cup. The Series C will remain with the basic chassis construction of the MKIII using steel tube and bonded composite panels for their weight and stiffness qualities. Bill Riley heads the design team for the new car and says, "The Series C uses the current MKIII as a base point in the development of this new product, along with the new technologies and resources that we have at our disposal for research and manufacture. Our design will reflect the knowledge and expertise that we have gained over the last five years."
Company co-founder Mark Scott is looking forward to delivering the first car to the customer, "We've worked hard to build good relationships with our customers and work alongside them to develop our products. They asked us to apply the lessons of the last few years and we have taken up this challenge. With the important criteria of cost efficiency and competitiveness, the new Series C will fulfill their requirements for a new sports car to race in 2001 and beyond. Rule stability and the growth of sports car racing in the USA, Europe and further afield, make these goals realistic. Le Mans 24 Hours is also an opportunity for the Series C and we would be proud to see the car running at this prestigious event."
