LANG SEEKS 7TH STRAIGHT TITLE AT NORTH VERNON FRIDAY

Indianapolis, Ind. drivers Rick Treadway and Michael Lang share the headlines this week in USAC Regional Midget Car news. Treadway won Saturday night's 25-lap race at New Castle, Ind. while Lang seeks for a record 7th consecutive USAC driving championship this Friday night at North Vernon, Ind.

Treadway wheeled his MCI WorldCom/Sunoco/Miller Lite/McClure Oil/Sanders Sports Marketing Gaerte to victory at Mount Lawn Speedway Saturday night, passing Brad Kuhn on the ninth lap and leading the rest of the way. Series point leader Daryl Campbell took second at the checkered flag, ahead of Joe Justice, Matt Maners and Kuhn. Campbell was the night's fastest qualifier and Justice and Treadway won the two 10-lap heat races.

Treadway's victory tied him with Kuhn for second place in the series standings going into September 23 and 30 races at New Castle. Campbell continues to lead the standings with a 53-point cushion.

Lang, ironically, also has a 53-point lead in his quest for an all-time record seventh consecutive USAC driving title going into Friday night's Dirt-Track Regional Midget Car Series events at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon, Ind. He leads Chris Coers, who is in a four-way dogfight for the series runner-up spot. A 30-lap feature will cap the program on the 3/8-mile dirt oval.

Lang previously won championships at the Indianapolis Speedrome in 1994-95-96-97 and 99, plus the 1998 championship at the now-defunct 16th Street Speedway. The previous record for consecutive USAC titles was Butch Hartman's four in the USAC Stock Car Series (1971-74), so Lang is in a class all by himself.

Coers, Andy Pierce, Critter Malone and Rick Vaughn are separated by only three points with 72 available at North Vernon. Mathematically, each has a chance at surpassing Lang's total.
