Part-time 2000 competitor will lead field for Sundays ACDelco Series race

MEMPHIS, Ten.--Indiana late model driver David Stremme of South Bend captured his first career ASA pole for Sundays Memphis 200 presented by Jani-King, breaking the previous track record for an ASA car at the .750-mile Memphis (Tenn.) Motorsports Park by nearly nine-hundredths of a second.

Stremmes lap of 22.830 sec. (118.265 mph) bested the previous track record, set in ASAs only previous visit in 1999 by Eddie Hoffman. Stremme practiced with speeds competitive to the fastest drivers all day, but shocked everyone and himself by taking the pole

"I am real happy for the whole team and the crew," Stremme said. "Butch (Miller) helped me out a lot today. I really enjoy running on these big tracks. I am real happy just to be in the top-20."

Three-time ASA National Champion Butch Miller turned in his best qualifying performance of the season, also besting the previous track record, turning a lap of 22.864 sec. (118.090 mph). In all, four drivers topped the old track record.

"I am really happy for David, he is a good kid and a good driver," said Miller. "With all the problems weve had this year, I feel really comfortable about starting right beside him tomorrow."

Current National Championship points leader Gary St. Amant will start third, with rookie Joey Clanton starting fourth and veteran Joe Nott will start from the fifth spot.

Mike Cope won his second qualifier race of the season, after passing Brandon Sperling just five laps from the end. The event saw only five cautions over the 50 lap distance.

Activities for the Memphis 200 presented by Jani-King begin on Sunday with the on-track fan autograph session at noon (local). The Memphis 200 presented by Jani-King takes the green flag at 2 pm.
