Dave Darland of Kokomo, Ind. won Friday night's 30-lap Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car race at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, but Tony Elliott's seventh-place finish enabled him to retain the series point lead.
Darland passed June 12 Cedar Rapids winner Brian Tyler on the 17th lap and led the rest of the way in the Kroger/Pringles/Sunny Delight Special to beat Turbines, Inc. fast qualifier Tracy Hines, Jason McCord, Tyler and Eric Gordon. McCord led the opening lap before Tyler paced the next 15 circuits.
Elliott emerged with a 23-point lead over Jay Drake going into the September 16 USAC "doubleheader" at Indianapolis Raceway Park, which features both the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Cars and the MCI WorldCom National Midget Cars. Drake finished 11th at Cedar Rapids.
Heat race winners at Cedar Rapids included Steve Surniak, J.J. Yeley and Tyler, while Hines won the True Value semi.
