Second win on one-mile track in 2000, fourth of season
MILWAUKEE, Wis.--Mike Garvey, who had started out 2000 struggling with DNFs, continues to turn his season around, picking up the win in Sundays Time Warner Cable 200 at the Milwaukee Mile. Garvey has accumulated seven podium finishes in the seasons last nine events, making him the hottest driver on the circuit.
Lakeville, Minnesotas Garvey took the lead late over rookie Joey Clanton following a round of pit stops. Garveys crew changed all four BFGoodrich Traction T/A Radial tires twice on the day, getting him out in front or near the top of the leaderboard.
"When you have that kind of rhythm and are right on track, you dont want to see it broken with a caution flag," said the Lakeville, Minn. native. "The car was awesome. The motor was awesome and the tires were perfect, I never thought the combination would be this good."
Two newcomers to the series, Mike Cope and Scott Fraser, each turned in the best runs of their respective short ASA careers. Short track stock car veteran Mike Cope of Florida finished as runner-up. After running midpack most of the day, Cope and his team made several late race adjustments, making him the fastest car on the track, although he could not catch Garvey.
Canadas Scott Fraser picked up the fourth top-ten finish in four career ASA starts, coming home third for his first podium result. An announced candidate for the 2001 Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie for the Year award, Fraser had car that ran up front throughout the race and battled Cope until the checkers.
Garvey led for 75 of the 200 laps, giving him his second win on a mile-track, after taking the victory earlier in the season at Chicago Motor Speedway. Pole sitter Johnny Sauter also ran up front until a spin which sent him into the turn one wall slowed his progress and relegated him to a 24th place finish. Garveys collected $21,200 portion of the $226,300 purse. Only five cautions slowed the race, with six different drivers leading at least one lap.
Gary St. Amant, who finished fifth, continues to increase his point lead, now at 341 points over Kevin Cywinski. The series resumes action next Monday, September 4, with the annual Labor Day race at the Minnesota State Fair Speedway. The Miller Lite 300 will take the green at 12:30 p.m. (Central) and will be telecast with a ninety-minute delay on TNN Sports at 2 p.m.
