IRP'S "KENYON CLASSIC" WEDNESDAY; KOKOMO'S 28-LAPS SUNDAY

Dane Carter of Brownsburg, Ind. picked up where his famous father Pancho left off by scoring a sensational last-lap victory in Sunday's 30-lap MCI WorldCom National Midget Car race at the Winchester (Ind.) Speedway.

Carter trailed Mark Boice of Noblesville, Ind. for most of the 30 laps, then made a bonzai pass going into turn three on the final lap and held off Boice's last-turn charge for the win in his Pedigo Chevy City/Wabash National Corporation Drinan/Ford. The win was Dane's first in USAC competition but extended the Carter's family's record at the 1/2-mile paved oval, since Pancho recorded a dozen USAC Sprint Car triumphs there between 1973 and 1978.

Sunday's race produced a "top-six" devoid of the "top-10" drivers in the series standings as Carter was followed to the checkered flag by Boice, Sarah McCune, John Nervo, Michael Lang and Brian Gerster. Point leader Kasey Kahne finished ninth, while runner-up Jay Drake did not compete and third-ranking Dave Darland was 14th.

Carter's next outing is Wednesday night's (August 23) "Mel Kenyon Classic" at Indianapolis Raceway Park. A 40-lap feature event tops the racing program at the .686-mile paved oval, where practice starts at 6 pm. Qualifying is set for 7 and racing at 8. Ryan Newman is the defending race winner.

Point leader Kahne won the last MCI WorldCom National Midget Car race at IRP, the May 27 "Night Before the 500" Classic.

The series also returns to the 1/4-mile dirt Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway Sunday night for the resumption of the rain-abbreviated July 9 feature event. Twenty-eight laps remain to complete the 30-lap race with Critter Malone leading at the restart. The race also awards points toward the 2000 USAC Dirt-Track Regional Midget Car Series championship.
