MONROE, Conn.-- What would you expect two-time NASCAR
Busch
Series, Grand National Division champion Randy LaJoie to be doing on his
weekend off? Rather than taking a trip to an amusement park or laying on
the beach, he's taking time to give back to his community. The driver of the No. 1 Bob Evans Restaurants Racing Chevrolet will return to his hometown of Norwalk, Conn., August 9 for the fourth annual Randy LaJoie Invitational Golf Tournament sponsored by Bob Evans Restaurants. Proceeds go to various charities, including Motor Racing Outreach (MRO), The Busch Series Ladies Association and Make-A-Wish Foundation.
"I don't get to go home very much and when I do, there are a lot of people to see," LaJoie said. "If you don't go see everyone, they think you're mad at them. It's hard to squeeze 26 years of friends into four days, so Roy Stratford, a golfing buddy of mine, decided to put a tournament together.
This way I could see everybody and raise money for charity at the same time. We've had a good turnout in the past, and we're expecting approximately 200 participants this year.
"Roy organized the first tournament, and unfortunately about three months later he died of cancer," LaJoie continued. "So, we try to keep up the good work that he started."
Some fellow NASCAR competitors who will be joining LaJoie include: Jerry Nadeau, Michael Waltrip, Steve Park, Jason Keller, Ted Christopher, Tim Fedewa, Lyndon Amick and Boris Said.
