CHICAGO, IL: Christian Fittipaldi, a driver on the CART
FedEx Championship circuit, was knocked unconscious in a practice crash at
the Chicago Motor Speedway today.
Fittipaldi was awake and alert when he was transported to a local hospital. However, under the CART rules, a driver is not allowed to compete in a racing weekend if he is rendered unconscious at any time during practice or qualifying in that weekend.
Carl Haas, co-owner of the Newman-Haas racing team stated that the team will not elect to run a replacement driver for the Target Grand Prix to be held Sunday. Only Michael Andretti, Fittipaldi's teammate and second place finisher at the Michigan 500 last weekend, will represent the team Sunday.
Fittipaldi, from Brazil, was released from the hospital. He is the nephew of two time Indianapolis 500 winner and Formula One World Champion, Emerson Fittipaldi.
