INDIANAPOLIS-- Jacques Villeneuve has signed to drive for Lucky Strike BAR-Honda for three more years.
"We are absolutely delighted with Jacques decision," British American Racing team director Craig Pollock said when the contract was announced July 24, "and the fact that he has registered a significant confidence in British American Racing. His commitment to stay indicates a shared belief that this is a team with which he can win races and, ultimately, the championship."
Villeneuve joined the new BAR team in 1999 after three years with Williams-Renault, with which he won the Formula One World Championship in 1997. While BAR failed to score any points in its rookie season, Villeneuve has shown that the car can be competitive this season. He finished fourth in the last two races.
"I would like to continue with the team and continue with that progress," Villeneuve said.
BAR has yet to announce who will be Villeneuves teammate next year. Villeneuve, winner of the 1995 Indianapolis 500, returns to the Brickyard later this year to participate in the inaugural SAP United States Grand Prix on Sept. 24.
