Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif., whose 10 feature victories are far and away the best of any driver in USAC racing this season, has vaulted to the top of the Pennzoil "Indiana Sprint Week" points after feature victories at Bloomington and Kokomo Friday and Sunday nights respectively.

Drake led all but the first lap of Fridays "Larry Rice Classic" at Bloomington in his KECO/Hoosier Tire Special, beating Derek Davidson, Tony Elliott, Jon Stanbrough and Briscoe to the checkered flag. Sunday night he caught early leader Jon Stanbrough on the 15th lap of the "Vince Osman Classic" at Kokomo and led the rest of the way to beat Cory Kruseman, Stanbrough, Brandon Petty and Bill Rose. A seventh at North Vernon Thursday and a second at Lawrenceburg Saturday left him holding a 26-point lead over Briscoe in the Pennzoil "Indiana Sprint Week" points going into the final three races this weekend.

The 30th Dr. Pepper "Tony Hulman Classic" unfolds Friday night at the Terre Haute Action Track, while Saturday nights race is at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville and Sundays finale is at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt. All three conclude with 30-lap features. Practice at Terre Haute starts at 5 pm, with qualifying at 5:45 and racing at 7. Lincoln Parks timetable has practice at 5:30, qualifying at 6:30 and racing at 7:30. Sundays Tri-State program starts with practice at 5:30 and qualifying at 6, with the first race at 7.

Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Calif. came from 15th starting position to score a surprise victory in Thursday nights opener at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon. Trailing his Ferguson Enterprises/Kohler Faucets/Alviso Rock machine to the flag were Rose, J.J. Yeley, Briscoe and Jerry Coons, Jr.

Briscoe captured Saturday nights 30-lapper at the Lawrenceburg Speedway, leading the final 14 laps in his Briscoe Homes/Hoosier Tire/AFCO Shocks machine after passing Justin Marvel. Drake was second ahead of Elliott, Coons and Marvel.

Turbines, Inc. fast qualifiers in the four events were Elliott, Tracy Hines, Briscoe and Marvel respectively, while True Value semis each night went to Yeley, Chris LaFollette, Eric Gordon and Petty.
