MADERA SPEEDWAY HOSTS MIDGET CARS SATURDAY

Jimmy Sills of Placerville, Calif. And Dennis Hart of Ventura, Calif. scored USAC MCI WorldCom feature victories Saturday night at Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway. Ironically, neither finds himself in the "top-10" in standings in their respective racing series.

Sills passed Thomas Meseraull on the second lap of the 25-lap Midget Car race and led the rest of the way in the MP Environmental Services Special. Bryan Stanfill finished second, ahead of Mike Figliomeni, series point leader Bobby Boone and Danny Ebberts, as Meseraull slipped to ninth at the checkered flag.

Boone, who posted the fastest qualifying time, leads Ebberts by 66 points going into this Saturday night's MCI WorldCom Western Midget Car event at the Madera (Calif.) Speedway. A 30-lap feature is scheduled on the 1/3-mile paved oval.

Dennis Hart, who won the first two USAC TQ Midget Car championships in 1987 and 1988, recorded his second feature victory of the season at Bakersfield. He caught early leader Jim Styer on lap 11 and led the rest of the way to beat Walt Johnson, Scott Hansen, J.J. Ercse and West Evans. Styer finished seventh.

New Zealand driver Bryce Townsend posted fast qualifying time in his first series appearance and Steve Davis and Ron Wade won heats.

Johnson's runner-up finish enabled him to increase his MCI WorldCom TQ Midget Car point lead over Ercse to eight points going into a July 8 race at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway.
