This Saturday's Russell Pro Triple Crown Championship opener at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. features a showdown among three top competitors who will be challenged by a bevy of others in the 21-lap feature race around the 2.52-mile road course.

Nathan Smith of Escalon, Calif., runner-up to Tyler McQuarrie in last year's Triple Crown standings, hopes to add the Triple crown title to his resume. He is competing this year as part of his prize package for winning last year's Formula Russell Championship.

Frank Dancs, who finished second to Smith in the 1999 Formula Russell standings, leads the 2000 points for that series and Timothy Barber, fourth in last year's Formula Russell points and second this season, is the youngest driver in Saturday's field at age 18.

Practice sessions are scheduled Thursday and Friday, with a 30-minute qualifying session on Friday establishing Saturday's starting lineup. Following a 20-minute warm-up, Saturday's race is set for about a 4:30 pm start.
