Schererville IN - Veteran Robbin Slaughter, in his own #6 Carmen's Vacuum-NAPA Auto Parts Ford, held off a hard-charging Chad Guinn and anyone else that tried to challenge and won the Illiana 100 ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series main event Saturday night at Illiana Motor Speedway.
The Columbus, Ohio driver, who started fourth, overhauled Hoosier Tire polesitter and new track record holder Paul Hahn on the 32nd circuit of the 100 lap main event and never relinquished the lead to win his second career ARCA Truck victory.
Guinn, in the Sonic Expediting Ford, followed the winner across the final stripe 2 lengths away with Hahn, Troy Marciniak and Joseph Wormcastle trailing in a tight line for third, fourth and fifth respectively.
Johnny Witham, who led the first lap, raced side-by-side with Hahn for two rounds at the onset with Hahn edging Witham at the line to lead the second lap. Hahn, in the Hahn's Collision-Eversole & Associates-Fox Auto Parts Ford, stretched his advantage to five lengths before Slaughter raced into second and mounted his challenge. Slaughter whittled away at Hahn's lead before making the winning pass just past the one-third mark. Guinn, who was in the lead hunt all afternoon, had to restart the event at the tail-end of the lead lap line when the Erie, Michigan driver made an unscheduled pitstop to secure loose lug nuts. Undeterred, Guinn, with 11 lead-lap trucks ahead, methodically maneuvered his way towards the front and with less than 10 laps to go, raced into second. From there, Guinn charged hard but couldn't eliminate Slaughter's advantage in time to challenge for the victory.
Defending champ Bill Withers and veteran Bobby Marvin were in the top five hunt for most of the way until mechanical gremlins took away their victory lane hopes. For Withers, it was a broken right-front wheel that caused an unscheduled pitstop while Marvin's transmission failed 63 laps in. Withers returned to finish 13th, five laps down. Dave Reeb finished sixth in front of Kyle Witwer in seventh with Michael Carter, John Kasmierski and Witham, the last truck on the lead lap, completing the top-10.
Kasmierski's ninth place finish in the Target Expediting Ford netted the Toledo, Ohio driver the Ed & Company Hard Charger Award for advancing the most positions from the 19th starting position. Slaughter also won the Cloyes Gear Halfway Leader Award while Marciniak was awarded the Hawk Best Brake of the Race honors.
A double-header is next in line for the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series with Toledo Speedway on June 30 followed by Flat Rock Speedway on July 1. Both events are being taped for SPEEDVISION.
