Todd Ellison of West Jordan Utah captured Monday night's USAC Western Sprint Car race at Tucson (Ariz.) Raceway Park, leading the final nine laps of the race after a long duel with runner-up Tony Hunt. Ellison's victory boosted him past Davey Hamilton and into the series point lead going into tonight's events at Sandia Motorsports Park in Albuquerque, N.M. The "swing" concludes Wednesday night at the brand-new Dodge City (Kans.) Raceway Park.
Ellison and his Custom Industries Special were followed to the checkered flag at Tucson by Hunt, Rick Williams, fast qualifier Jeff Gardner and Jimmy Sills. Gardner also won the first heat race and Hunt and Sills also won heats. Bryan Stanfill won the semi.
Forty-lap feature events are on tap at both Albuquerque and Dodge City.
