Takes Advantage of Lapped Cars to Win on Final Lap

LOUISVILLE, Ky. A wild finish that saw several of the leaders spin through the checkered flag allowed three-time American Speed Association champion Butch Miller to collect his 40th career victory at the Louisville Motor Speedway Saturday night, during the running of the ACDelco Service Specialist 300. Miller took the lead, passing Californias Ricky Johnson on the last lap and held off the charging Johnson through the final turn thanks to lapped traffic.

Its been a long time since Ive seen the checked flag, said Miller, who hadnt won a race since he left following his 1994 ASA championship season. When I come to this race track, I would rather be sitting in the stands. It is a fun place to watch the race, not so fun to drive.

Coming to the checkers, Johnson made a bonsai run for the lead, sliding through the grass and causing the leaders behind Miller to brake-check, shuffling the final standings. When the smoke and dust cleared, Johnson grabbed second, with Kevin Cywinski finishing third.

Pole sitter Gary St. Amant of Ohio, who remains the leader in the 2000 ASA National Points chase, ran up front throughout the entire race until a broken tie-rod forced a lengthy pit stop and an eventual 20th-place finish, his worst of the year. Rick Beebe came home fourth, despite being a lap down for much of the event. Veteran driver Dave Sensiba ended up fifth.

Miller led 110 laps, including a lengthy stretch early in the race, collecting $16,450 of the $197,800 purse. The event saw 20 cautions on the demanding .438-mile oval. The race saw six different drivers swap the lead on seven occasions.

St. Amant continues to hold a 43-point lead over Cywinski heading into the June 17 event at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. The WorldBestBuy.com 250 will take the green at 3 p.m. (Eastern) and will be telecast LIVE on TNN Sports.
