Brian Tyler of Parma, Mich. captured Friday night's 30-lap Stoops Freightliner/USAC Sprint Car race at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The victory in the Dynamics, Inc. Kroger/Pringles/Sunny Delight Special boosted Brian to fifth in the new series standings going into the May 24 race at Anderson (Ind.) Speedway.

Tyler took the lead from his outside-front-row starting spot and never looked back on the 1/2-mile paved oval, leading all 30 laps of the "Advance Auto Parts Iowa Sprint Classic." Dave Darland finished second ahead of Dave Steele, Billy Puterbaugh, Jr. and Tony Elliott. Elliott's finish left him leading the series point standings by eight over Derek Davidson, who finished seventh.

Tracy Hines, whose Turbines, Inc. fastest qualifying lap of 17.526 seconds was the fastest in the track's storied 75-year history, failed to finish the feature due to engine problems while running third. Tyler, J.J. Yeley, Brad Armstrong and Levi Jones won the heats and Darland won the True Value semi.

The Stoops Freightliner Sprint Cars resume action May 24 in the "Keebler/Cheez-it 50" at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway.
