INDIANAPOLIS- Plenty of high-horsepower excitement and family fun will be available on Family Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 13, the opening day of practice for the 84th Indianapolis 500.
Gates open at 9 a.m. (EST), with free admission for children 12 and under when accompanied by an adult. The first 5,000 fans through the gates will receive a free, retro-style Indianapolis 500 pennant styled after one of the past race pennants.
Once through the gates, families can choose between plenty of on- and off-track activities.
The opening practice for the Indianapolis 500 takes place from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., as the drivers and 220-mph machines of the Indy Racing Northern Light Series take to the 2.5-mile oval in preparation for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing on May 28.
Off the track, The Danger Brothers will play throughout the day on the Pepsi Stage, and the Boehmer Family Jugglers will perform in the Plaza area behind the new Pagoda control tower. Face painters and clowns also will entertain children and their parents in the Plaza.
Two important groups also will be honored on Family Day. Volunteers for the annual 500 Festival in Indianapolis will be saluted in a special presentation before practice, and category winners in the Festival of Art for children will be honored. 500 Festival volunteers, and festival of Arts winners and their families will be the guests of the Speedway on this special day.
