DINWIDDIE, Va. - Kenny Bernstein was quickest in opening
Top Fuel qualifying
Friday at the Moto1.net NHRA Nationals presented by Chevrolet. Persistent
rain showers forced NHRA officials to cancel the second qualifying
session.
Jerry Toliver, Kurt Johnson and Bob Panella also were among the leaders in
their respective categories at the $1.8 million race, the sixth of 23
events
in the $45 million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series.
Bernstein, 55, covered the Virginia Motorsports Park quarter-mile in 4.593 seconds at 312.93 mph in his Budweiser King dragster to pace the Top Fuel order.
"If it's overcast and gray tomorrow I think the 4.59 is in jeopardy," Bernstein said. "It was good enough to take the pressure off of us knowing we're in the field comfortably. It was unfortunate that we didn't get to run tonight. I know we were going to take a shot at the track and I'm sure some of the other guys would have too. You can't do much when it's wet and cold."
Toliver was the Funny Car leader, posting a 4.920 at 303.91 in his WWF Racing Pontiac Firebird.
"The purpose of switching to the new Firebird body was to make more downforce," said Toliver, who has won two events this season in a Chevy Camaro. "This car is definitely better than anything we had before and I think it helped us out here today. I think we've got a lot left in the car for tomorrow."
Johnson paced the 16-car Pro Stock order, running 6.876 at 199.49 in his AC Delco Camaro.
Panella drove his Chevy S-10 to the front in Pro Stock Truck, covering the distance in a track record elapsed time 7.498 with a speed of 178.45.
Qualifying continues Saturday with sessions at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
