NorthernLight IRL: Indianapolis Motor Speedway to salute U.S. Military May 21

INDIANAPOLIS- The Indianapolis Motor Speedways annual salute to the United States military will take place Sunday, May 21 with Armed Forces Day.

May 21 is also MBNA Bump Day for Indy Racing Northern Light Series competitors - the last day that drivers will have a shot at qualifying for the 84th Indianapolis 500.

Armed Forces Day ceremonies will get underway at 11:15 a.m. near the start/finish line of the 2.5-mile oval.

The ceremonies will include a fly-over by military jets and a parachute jump. U.S. Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana will conduct an honorary swearing-in of inductees from all five military branches (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard).

The public is invited to get a close-up look at military air and ground equipment that will be on display in the east parking lot of the Speedways Hall of Fame Museum May 20-21.

The complete schedule for MBNA Bump Day/Armed Forces Day:

  • Indy Racing Northern Light Series practice: 10-11:15 a.m.
  • Armed Forces Day ceremonies: 11:15 a.m.
  • Qualifications: Noon-6 p.m.
