SPRINTS, MIDGET CARS COMBINE AGAIN AT IRWINDALE SATURDAY
The Western USAC Sprint Cars and MCI WorldCom Midget Cars combine this Saturday night for a "doubleheader" racing program at the Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway after back-to-back events this past weekend in northern California.
Kasey Kahne of Enumclaw, Wash, Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif. and Davey Hamilton of Las Vegas, Nev. recorded feature wins in the Madera Speedway and Stockton 99 Speedway events Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Kahne won both Saturday night's Madera and Sunday's Stockton Midget Car 30-lappers in the Steve Lewis Wynn's/Beast/PRI Pink Ford. At Madera he trailed Ryan Newman for 28 laps before leading the final two to beat Newman, fast qualifier John Starks, Bobby Boone and Shane Scully. On Sunday he posted fast qualifying time, then caught Boone on the 22nd lap and led the rest of the way to beat Boone, Newman, Thomas Meseraull and Starks.
Hunt passed Hamilton on the 26th lap at Madera and led the final 15 laps to win the 40-lap Sprint feature in Ken Pierson's Wynn's/Bos Sheet Metal Special. He was trailed to the checkered flag by lady driver Amy Barnes, Jason McCord, Hamilton and Mike Boat. Hamilton came back on Sunday to lead all 40 laps of the Stockton Sprint main in his Consani Racing Special, beating Todd Ellison, Jeff Gardner, fast qualifier Burney Lamar and Kevin Kierce.
A 30-lap Midget Car and 40-lap Sprint Car feature are on tap for this Saturday at Irwindale, which hosted seven Sprint and six Midget Car races in its inaugural year in 1999.
