Anderson Speedway's April 2 USAC "doubleheader" will become the
inaugural
"Glen Niebel Classic," featuring both the Stoops Freightliner USAC Sprint
Cars and MCI WorldCom National Midget Cars on the exciting 1/4-mile paved
oval where Niebel, who succumbed to cancer last December, experienced some
of his greatest success.
"We are delighted to announce our salute to Glen as part of our USAC doubleheader debut," said track organizers Rick Dawson and R.J. Scott. "Glen played a big part in the history of our track and his success in the annual Little 500 here is well documented. We hope this event serves as a fitting tribute to the memory of one of auto racing's grandest gentlemen."
Fifty-lap feature events for each USAC series cap the track's activities April 2 and will be followed by a Thundercar Figure 8 race. The Midget Car race opens USAC's 2000 midwestern outdoor calendar and the Sprint Car race follows the preceding night's series-opening "Don Branson/Jud Larson Classic" at Rossburg, OH.
A USAC participant for more than three decades, Glen Niebel won the 1995 USAC Silver Crown and Sprint Car owner championships with "Triple Crown" champion driver Tony Stewart and cars he owned and prepared won Anderson's Little 500 classic six times! In 1995 he was inducted into the Little 500 "Hall of Fame."
The "Glen Niebel Classic" will serve as the first of three legs in the track's "Anderson Speedway Sprint Car Challenge" which will afford a $5,000 bonus to any driver who can win both the April 2 and May 24 USAC Sprint Car features as well as the May 27 PayLess/Delco Remy "Little 500."
