GLENDORA, Calif. - Members of the National Hot Rod Association will benefit from a significant dollar increase in total coverage provided by the NHRA Member Excess Catastrophic Medical Insurance Policy, effective Feb. 1, 2000. The increase doubles the current benefit program, which now totals $500,000 in excess coverage available to injured NHRA members in the event of an incident at an NHRA event.

The NHRA Member Excess Catastrophic Medical Insurance Policy activates in the absence of primary medical insurance for the injured party, or once the limits of the injured party's primary policy have been maximized, in accordance with provisions of the NHRA policy.

"We hope we will never have the need to use this policy," said Carl Olson, NHRA vice president of insurance / risk management and international relations. "However, with the ever-increasing costs of medical procedures, it's nice to know that the policy is there if needed."

This insurance program was created by NHRA in the mid-1980s, and offered original total benefits of $100,000 in excess coverage. The overall limits of the program grew to $250,000 in excess coverage by the start of the 1991 season.

Headquartered in Glendora, Calif., the NHRA is the primary sanctioning body for the sport of drag racing in the United States. It presents 23 national events through its NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series. The NHRA has 85,000 racers and members nationwide and 142 member tracks.
