NASCAR WCUP: Michael Lingerfelt (Stewart's tire changer) Medical Update

Huntersville, NC--Michael Lingerfelt, front tire changer for the Joe Gibbs Racing #20 The Home Depot Pontiac, is in good condition resting comfortably at Halifax Medical Center. Lingerfelt underwent surgery, performed by Dr. Mark Gillesby, Sunday night to stabilize a non-compound but separated fracture of the left femur sustained in a pit road accident during the Daytona 500. The 24 year-old native of Marietta, South Carolina is expected to make a full recovery.

"I am eager to get home and get the rehab program going so I can get back to work," said Lingerfelt from his Daytona Beach hospital room. "Dr. Gillesby is very optimistic about the success of the surgery and my recovery time. My care from the staff of the Speedway infield care center as well as here at the hospital has been excellent."

"Everyone in the NASCAR family has been great. I want to express my deepest appreciation to everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing and The Home Depot for the kindness they've shown and assistance given to Gayle (Thomas, Lingerfelt's longtime girlfriend) and I. They have made this situation much easier for both of us. Also, many thanks to the crew members of other teams and the fans that have called and sent cards."

Tentatively Lingerfelt is scheduled for release from Halifax on Wednesday, February 23. Joe Gibbs Racing will assist with the transport of Lingerfelt back to his North Carolina home.
