Will Sponsor Johnny Benson's #10 Pontiac
Daytona, Fla-- Tyler Jet Motorsports and Lycos, Inc., a leading Web media company and the owner of the Lycos Network, today unveiled Lycos will become the title sponsor of Johnny Benson's #10 Pontiac for NASCAR's 2000 Winston Cup Series. Lycos will officially hit the track with Winston Cup this Sunday in what is arguably one of the most prestigious sporting events in the U.S., the Winston Cup Series' annual opening race, the Daytona 500.
"All winter, we have been saying that we were going to wait for the right partner to come along and this is what we have been waiting for," said Benson, who has spent the week in practice driving the white Pontiac and will start 27th on the Daytona highbanks on Sunday. "Lycos has sponsored a NASCAR team before. Lycos understands the value of sponsorship. I feel that our race team will help Lycos reach hundreds of thousands of NASCAR fans across America during the season."
Tyler Jet Motorsports Owner Tim Beverley said several sponsors approached the team about a single event agreement. However, Beverley said he was only interested in an agreement that would allow the James Ince-led team to focus solely on racing in 2000 and not worry about sponsorship details.
"Lycos is committed to quality sponsorships and understands the passion of racing fans." said Jim Hoenscheid, director of promotions for Lycos. "Lycos led the pack two years ago with the Internet's first NASCAR team sponsorship. Lycos received more than $10 million in measured television exposure during our first foray with NASCAR. The move into the Winston Cup Series reinforces our leadership position while providing Lycos with yet another chance to stand out in a competitive marketplace. We look forward to a successful season with Tyler Jet Motorsports and are excited to have a driver of Johnny's experience."
"We had the opportunity to be pretty selective. We chose Lycos," Beverley said. "We still have associate sponsorships available. With the online reach and name awareness of our title sponsor Lycos, we feel there will be no trouble signing new associate sponsors to our team. This arrangement with Lycos is just the start of what we hope will be a winning 2000 season."
