Two-time vintage Formula B (1997-1998)
Joe Blacker is set to make the move to sedans with a Total Audi
Performance-prepared Audi S4. Blacker, of Columbia, Md., has competed in
formula and sports racing cars since he began racing in 1993, and looks at
the jump to the sedan and sports car-based Speedvision GT as a challenge.
"It’s something different for me," said Blacker, who plans a full season in the No. 45 Don Rosen Imports/QSC Audio Audi S4. "I really like this car—I even drive one on the street. I’ve been looking at this series for a while now, and Audi is offering good support. I know there are a lot of experienced drivers out there, and it’s pretty stiff competition, so our goal is to finish every race and win Rookie of the Year."
The car’s preparation is being overseen by Ivor Wigham of TAP, who has taken both rally and touring car championships in his 18-year Audi-tuning career. Once the car is completed, it will be run out of the RC Imports team, with crew chief Mark Raspi and technical assistance from Steve Cole, racing engineer for the factory Corvette Le Mans effort.
Blacker claims the 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 will produce adequate horsepower, and testing will begin in mid-March at Moroso.
"It’s really a cool lookin’ car," added Blacker. "It’s not your average race car, and that’s what gives it appeal. I have a friend who races a Lexus in Motorola Cup, and he said he’s gotten a lot of interest because it’s not a typical race car. I think this will be the same."
