POMONA, Calif. - John Force scored his 91st No. 1 qualifying effort Saturday, and will lead competitors in his category into Sunday's 11 a.m. eliminations at the 40th annual AutoZone Winternationals.

Joe Amato, Jim Yates and Steve Johns also were qualifying leaders in their respective pro categories at the $1.7 million race, the first of 23 events in the $45 million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series.

Force, from Yorba Linda, Calif., covered the Pomona Raceway quarter-mile in 4.893 seconds at 311.20 mph in his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang to pace Funny Car.

"I'm ready to just let go and have some fun," said Force, who'll face Frank Pedregon in tomorrow's opening round of eliminations.

"Hole-shot Pedregon, that's just what I need," Force quipped. "I'm glad to see the Worsham's with a two-car team. Hopefully we started something back in '96 that's catching on. You've got to watch out for (Jerry) Toliver and (Jim) Epler, too, they're going to be tough. I'm looking forward to the competition."

Amato, from Exeter, Pa., took top honors in Top Fuel, successfully rebounding after failing to qualify here one year ago. He powered his Dynomax dragster to a 4.645 at 320.05 to pace the 16-car order.

"What a difference a year makes," said Amato, who plans to honor Peanuts comic Charles Schultz with a special tribute on his dragster during tomorrow's race. Amato has featured Snoopy as his racing mascot for many years.

"Last year after we didn't make the race, I was worrying about doing more testing with my car and ordering more parts," Amato added. "This year I'm worrying about finding a consistent tune-up and getting it to go down the track four times Sunday."

Drivers who received $500 fines for oiling the racing surface included Doug Kalitta in Top Fuel and Funny Car drivers Johnny Gray, Dale Creasy Jr. and Frank Pedregon.

Yates, from Alexandria, Va., earned his 17th career No. 1 qualifying position in Pro Stock, covering the distance in 6.878 seconds at 199.58 in a Pontiac Firebird. It is the first top qualifying effort for Yates since the 1998 NorthStar Nationals in Brainerd, Minn.

Johns, from Mountville, Pa., earned his first top qualifying effort in Pro Stock Truck, posting a 7.527 at a track record speed of 178.99 in a Chevy S-10. Johns earned his first career victory here last November, winning the NHRA Finals.
