Formula One: Start time, Distance set for inaugural Grand Prix at Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS - The inaugural United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis will start at 2 p.m. (EST) Sept. 24, 2000, and the race length has been set for 73 laps on the 2.606-mile (4.195 km) road course, according to provisional FIA information released today.

The overall distance of the race is 190.294 miles (306.235 km). The FIA requires that all Formula One events cover the least number of laps that exceeds 189.527 miles (305 km).

All Formula One races also have a maximum time limit of two hours, according to FIA regulations. This race should be completed in less than two hours, barring a race stoppage..

Qualifying will take place from 1-2 p.m. (EST) Sept. 23. Thats the standard qualifying time for all 17 Formula One races.

The inaugural United States Grand Prix, Round 15 of 17 in the World Championship, is one of 13 Grands Prix on the 2000 schedule that start at 2 p.m. local time. Only the British, Canadian, Malaysian and Japanese Grands Prix start at different times.

The rest of the weekend schedule for the inaugural United States Grand Prix will be announced at a later date.
