Racing legend Dan Gurney has been chosen winner of the first Shav Glick Award, given for distinguished achievement in motorsports by a Californian. Sponsored by car care products company Eagle One, the award honors the venerable Los Angeles Times sportswriter, and will be presented to Gurney April 30 at the NASCAR Winston Cup NAPA Auto Parts 500 at California Speedway.

Gurney, of Newport Beach, has had success on an international scale as a driver, car builder, owner and team manager. Nominees also included Wally Parks, NHRA founder; Rick Mears, four-time Indy 500 winner; Kenny Roberts, world champion motorcyclist; and the late car owner/racing promoter J.C. Agajanian. Judges were Bill Center, San Diego Union; Jim Short, Riverside Press-Enterprise; Doug Stokes, Irwindale Speedway; Mary-Ellen Wright-Rana, Laguna Seca Raceway; and Mike Harris, Associated Press.
