Tony Schumacher, driver of the Exide Batteries dragster, took over the Top
Fuel points lead at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis and has been in the
lead ever since. Schumacher, from Park Ridge, Ill., won his first national
event in Dallas and needs only to qualify in Pomona to clinch his first
NHRA Winston championship in one of the closest Top Fuel points battles
ever. He is also the first driver in the history of the NHRA to eclipse
the 330 mph-barrier when he ran at 330.23 in Phoenix earlier this year.
