INDIANAPOLIS- Pep Boys Indy Racing League Executive Director Leo Mehl issued this statement today in response to the announcement by Goodyear Tire & Rubber that it will not return as a tire-supplier in 2000 to the Indy Racing League or the Indianapolis 500.

"I was surprised and disappointed by the announcement today. "After being a Goodyear employee for so long, the first thing I think about is the thousands of dedicated employees who worked so hard to design, build and service race tires for the Indianapolis 500 since 1964.

"The competition between Goodyear and Firestone in the Indy Racing League has been healthy and exciting. Both have won 17 races and two Indianapolis 500s since the League began in 1996.

"Since Firestone returned to Indy Racing, they have provided excellent tires, support and enthusiasm to the teams and drivers. I look forward to working with Firestone as they supply tires to all of our competitors in the future."
